Video Transcript
In this short video we show you how to import MBOX files into Mozilla Thunderbird using the ImportExportTools NG add-on. MBOX is a standard email storage format used by Gmail, Apple Mail, Evolution and many other email clients.
Mozilla Thunderbird uses MBOX format internally but does not offer a direct import option without an add-on. ImportExportTools NG is a free extension available from the official Thunderbird add-ons site that adds this functionality.
Open Thunderbird and go to Tools then Add-ons and Themes. Search for ImportExportTools NG and install it. Restart Thunderbird to activate the add-on. Right-click on the mail folder where you want your emails to appear. Select ImportExportTools NG then Import MBOX file. Browse to your MBOX file and click OK. Your emails appear in Thunderbird immediately with full formatting and attachments preserved.
The add-on also supports importing all MBOX files from a folder at once, which is useful when you have multiple mailboxes to import.
What is an MBOX File?
An MBOX file is a standard email storage format that saves multiple email messages in a single plain-text file. Email clients such as Gmail, Apple Mail, Evolution, Eudora and older versions of Thunderbird use MBOX to export or back up mailboxes. When you download a Google Takeout archive, your Gmail messages arrive as MBOX files. Thunderbird stores its own emails internally in MBOX format, but importing an MBOX file from an external source requires the ImportExportTools NG add-on.
6 Steps to Import MBOX Files in Thunderbird
-
Open Mozilla Thunderbird. Go to the Tools menu and select Add-ons and Themes.
-
In the Add-ons Manager, search for ImportExportTools NG. Click Add to Thunderbird and confirm the installation prompt.
-
Restart Mozilla Thunderbird to activate the ImportExportTools NG add-on.
-
In the Thunderbird folder list on the left, right-click on the mail folder where you want the imported emails to appear.
-
From the context menu select ImportExportTools NG then choose Import MBOX file.
-
Browse to your .mbox file, select it and click OK. Your emails are imported into Thunderbird immediately with all formatting and attachments intact.
Things to Keep in Mind
- ImportExportTools NG is free and available directly inside Thunderbird's Add-ons Manager. You do not need to download anything from an external website.
- Large MBOX files (over 1 GB) may take a few minutes to import. Keep Thunderbird open and do not close it during the process.
- If you have multiple MBOX files, use the option Import all MBOX files from a directory to import them all at once instead of one by one.
- The import does not modify the original MBOX file. Your source file stays intact after the import completes.
- Thunderbird on Windows, macOS and Linux all support ImportExportTools NG. The steps are identical on all three platforms.
Tips for Success
- Create a dedicated folder in Thunderbird before importing so your emails land in an organised location rather than mixing with existing mail.
- If you exported from Gmail using Google Takeout, your archive may contain one MBOX file per label. Use the batch import option to bring all labels in at once.
- After importing, use Thunderbird's search to confirm your emails arrived correctly before deleting the original MBOX file.
- If the MBOX file was created on a different operating system, line endings may differ. ImportExportTools NG handles this automatically so you do not need to convert the file.
