In this video we show you how to view the email contents stored inside AOL PFC files. AOL PFC stands for Personal Filing Cabinet and is a proprietary file format used by AOL Desktop software to store emails, attachments and folders locally on your computer.

If you no longer have AOL Desktop installed you cannot open these files directly by double-clicking them. To read the emails inside a PFC file you need the SysTools AOL PFC Converter tool.

Download and install the tool from the SysTools website. Once installed open the application. Click on the Add File button to browse to your PFC file. Select the file and click Open.

The tool scans the PFC file and displays all email folders and messages in a tree view on the left panel. You can click on any folder such as Inbox, Sent or Saved Mail to see the emails it contains. Click on any email to preview its full contents including the subject, sender, recipient, date and message body in the right panel.

Attachments are listed in the Attachments tab and can also be previewed. All email data is fully readable without needing AOL Desktop installed on your computer.

After reviewing your emails you can export them to PST for Outlook, EML, MSG or other formats to migrate your data to a different email client.

What is an AOL PFC File?

AOL PFC stands for Personal Filing Cabinet. It is a proprietary file format used by AOL Desktop software to store emails, attachments, folder structures and other mailbox data locally on your Windows PC. When you used AOL Desktop, all your saved emails were written to a .pfc file in the background. The problem is that PFC files cannot be opened by any standard email client like Outlook or Thunderbird. Without AOL Desktop installed, the emails appear completely inaccessible. The solution is a dedicated PFC reader tool such as SysTools AOL PFC Converter, which can open and display the full contents of any PFC file without needing AOL Desktop on your machine.

6 Steps to View Email Contents of AOL PFC Files

  1. Download SysTools AOL PFC Converter from the SysTools website and run the installer. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete installation.
  2. Launch the software from the desktop shortcut or Start menu.
  3. Click Add File, browse to your .pfc file on your computer and click Open.
  4. The tool scans the file and displays all email folders and messages in a folder tree on the left panel, just like a normal email client.
  5. Click any folder (Inbox, Sent, Saved Mail) to list its emails, then click any email to read the full message including subject, sender, date and body text in the preview panel.
  6. Switch to the Attachments tab in the preview panel to see and open any files attached to the email. All data is readable with no AOL Desktop required.

Things to Keep in Mind

Topic Detail
File location PFC files are usually in the AppData\Local\AOL folder or My Documents. Open Windows File Explorer and search for .pfc to find yours.
Large files PFC files with thousands of emails may take a minute or two to scan and load. Keep the application open during the scan.
Free vs paid The free version lets you preview all email contents. Exporting to PST, EML or other formats requires the paid version of SysTools AOL PFC Converter.
Older AOL versions PFC files from older versions of AOL Desktop are fully supported. The PFC format has not changed significantly across versions.
Windows only AOL PFC files and the converter tool are Windows-only. Mac users will need to run the tool on a Windows PC or a Windows virtual machine.

Tips for Success

  • Before opening the PFC file, make a backup copy of it in a separate folder. This ensures you always have the original intact in case anything goes wrong during preview or conversion.
  • Use the search function inside the tool to find specific emails by subject, sender or date range. This saves time when the PFC file contains thousands of messages.
  • If you want to import your AOL emails into Gmail or Outlook, export them as EML first and then use an import tool specific to that platform.
  • PFC files from different AOL accounts are separate files. If you had multiple AOL accounts on the same PC, look for multiple .pfc files and load each one separately.
